JOHANNESBURG and Windhoek, in Namibia, have forged ties that should benefit communities in both cities, as it aims to promote economic and social development.
Joburg Executive Mayor Councillor Amos Masondo and his Windhoek counterpart, Councillor Matheus Shikongo, signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday, 28 September in the Namibian capital.
The agreement follows several technical discussions held in 2003.
The two cities agreed to commit themselves to a mutually beneficial partnership over the next five years and will co-operate in a number of areas, namely planning, urbanisation and environment; water and waste management; economic development; councillor development; and safety and security.
Following the signing, the cities will work on an action plan at a technical level that will prioritise the identified programmes and concrete projects of co-operation.
The programmes and projects will be reviewed and reported on annually.
Under the memorandum, Windhoek has become one of Johannesburg's sister cities.
