Heritage Day, marked nationally on 24 September, is a celebration of South Africa's diverse cultures, customs and traditions.

And the aim of the music festival, sponsored by 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Epson, the digital technology company, is to promote "our wonderful South African heritage and quality South African music", according to the 94.7 Highveld Stereo website.

The site says it is about bringing the city together in the biggest musical festival.

Station manager Ravi Naidoo goes further: "The event gives our listeners an opportunity to see the best local artists on stage together.

"We have a wealth of talent in this country and the showcasing of these artists forms an integral part of our business."

On offer on Joburg Day is everything a music fan could want, from Afro pop to R&B, from kwaito to rock.

The line-up includes Malaika, Eden, Mean Mr Mustard, Heinz Winckler, Wonderboom, Dr Victor, Danny K, Mandoza, Dawnay, Freshlyground and Arno Carstens.

Children are also catered for: there are space gyros to spin on, arts and crafts, sand art, face painting, carousels and jumping castles.

Tickets cost R100 each, and R60 for children under 12. Full price tickets are available at Computicket, but children's tickets can only be bought at the festival.

The gates will be opened at 8am, and the concert runs from 11.30am to 7pm. The Randburg Sports Complex is on the corner of Hans Schoeman and Hans Strijdom drives.
