What is the IDP?
EVERY municipality is required to produce an Integrated Development Plan, in which that city's future is mapped over the short, medium and long term.

Issues that are considered include spatial planning, disaster management, finances, performance targets and economic development.

The key to the process is "integration", meaning that all processes are considered in relation to one another.

In the words of Executive Mayor Councillor Amos Masondo, the IDP for Johannesburg is the City's "roadmap" for the next 30 years. For more information, click here.

IDP meetings kick off

CITIZENS are urged to get to their regional meetings to discuss their priorities for the City's Integrated Development Plan.

JOBURGERS are being encouraged to attend meetings in their regions to participate in discussions about the City's Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the next five years.

Public participation meetings will take place in each of the 11 regions between 21 September and 29 October.

The IDP is viewed as the City's business plan as it contains the achievements, challenges and details of all investment and development initiatives that the City wishes to undertake.

Public input is a pivotal aspect of local government decision-making and the City is continuing its campaign to ensure this happens by liaising directly with communities.

During the year, ward councillors meet ward committee members and their communities to discuss the concerns and needs that arise in their areas. At regional level, meetings take place on a quarterly basis to discuss the collective concerns and demands of the regions' wards.

"During September and October the City of Johannesburg will be going to meet with communities to listen to what they consider priorities for the next five years," explains Keith Peacock from the office of the City Manager.

A statement released by the City reads, "We encourage you as a resident of Johannesburg to participate in the consultation process by attending these meetings and having your say.

"As a City we remain committed to promoting a safe and healthy environment, promoting economic growth, combating HIV and Aids, reducing interruptions to electricity and water supplies, improving the billing system, enforcing by-laws and facilitating housing delivery."
