THE public's call for the world's most popular dance show to return to Jozi's Civic Theatre has been heeded. Spirit of the Dance will be on at the theatre's main stage from 31 September to 21 October.
A breathtaking display of Irish traditional dance, the show incorporates a blend of Latino sounds, dazzling costumes and first-class choreography. The dance troupe is known worldwide for its unmistakable energy, but more so for the astounding precision with which the dancers execute their moves.
The show has been described by publicist Debbi de Souza as "bursting with raw energy". "On stage the world champion Irish dancers sound like a runaway express train and their ... skill and military precision sends shivers down your spine."
Each year, Spirit of the Dance is reworked to keep up with audience tastes and global dance trends.
It's first showing at the Civic Theatre was in 2002. In the five weeks that is showed, every existing box office record at the theatre was broken. More than 52 000 people saw that show, so it came as no surprise that on its return tour in March 2003 it played to double the number of people.
In its 11-year history, the show has been seen by 30 million people worldwide and has won nine Golden Globe Awards for Best Choreography and Best International Production.
The upcoming tour features Ireland's Three Tenors - Lloyd Ellery, Patrick Callan and James Wenban - as special guests.
Tickets range from R161 to R263 and there is a 10 percent discount for groups of 10 or more. Tickets can be bought online at Computicket, or by telephone on 083 915 8000.
Performances are on Tuesdays to Thursdays at 8pm; on Fridays at 6pm and 9pm; on Saturdays at 5pm and 8pm; and on Sundays at 3pm.
