Bassline hosts
Puisano festival

YOUNG up-and-coming jazz musicians will be performing on stage with their older mentors at the Puisano Jazz Festival.

THE Bassline will be a hotbed of jazz this spring, when the Puisano Jazz Festival comes to the venue on Saturday, 17 September.

It is hosted by the City of Johannesburg, in partnership with the Gauteng department of sports, recreation, arts and culture.

The Puisano Jazz Festival, which started in 2001, gives up-and-coming jazz musicians a chance to perform, sharing a stage with their mentors. It is part of Heritage Month celebrations.

Willie Tsaka, the senior cultural officer in the provincial department, explains how the festival works. "Six jazz groups from different regions in the province were taken for training after they had auditioned.

"Paul Hanmer was one of the adjudicators during training - based on his knowledge of the industry. The musicians were trained in administration skills, business management, marketing and playing skills on different instruments.

"There is a programme that searches for existing jazz groups who have potential. After the groups have been selected they are taken for auditions and then to a two-week training workshop," he says.

Of 24 bands, six were selected, Tsaka says, adding that those who were not selected would not be thrown out. Mini festivals will be organised in different regions that will give the artists a platform to perform. At these they might be noticed by promoters or record companies.

Selection was based on the groups' presentation, technical and innovative skills, and some of them have managed to sign contracts with record companies.

In addition to performing at the Puisano Jazz Festival, the artists, who cover contemporary, fusion and African jazz, are scheduled for Jazz on the Lake, on Sunday, 4 September.

Admission to the festival is free. The show starts at 6pm on 17 September at the Bassline.
