Date a celeb, help
stop child abuse

WOMEN and Men Against Child Abuse is hosting a celebrity auction to raise funds. On offer are dates with more than 50 stars.

October 5, 2005

EVER wondered what Patricia de Lille's favourite meal is? Well, you can find out if you outbid other punters for a meal with her, at the Women and Men Against Child Abuse Celebrity Auction.

The who's who in sport, entertainment and business have offered to spend time with the highest bidders in support of Women and Men Against Child Abuse. Time with the celebrities - more than 50 in total - will be auctioned at a glittering event at Gallagher Estate, in Midrand, on Thursday, 6 October.

A number of celebrities have volunteered their time already, and the organisers are urging the public to support the cause.

"Every year we have one major fundraising event and this year we decided to go the celebrity auction route," says Lyn Wells, the organisation's fundraiser.

"We have had amazing support from a number of celebrities, but we are not getting enough support from the public."

While most of the celebrities are offering lunch dates, bands like Watershed and Wonderboom are giving away free entry to their gigs, and Arno Carstens will give the highest bidder a private, unplugged, acoustic performance at their home.

The theme for the night is Time - Travel, and local acts like Des and Dawn Lindberg and Bruce Millar will perform songs from as long ago as the 1940s.

All proceeds will go towards managing two children's clinics run by the organisation. The clinics, one in Alexandra and one in Boksburg, are one-stop facilities that provide free, comprehensive treatment for children who have suffered sexual, physical or emotional abuse.

According to its website, Women and Men Against Child Abuse is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation that works to provide specialised facilities for abused children.

It has also introduced three preventative and support programmes that deal with education, rehabilitation and counselling.

Tickets are R395 per person or R4 740 for a table of 12. Reservations can be made online at Women and Men Against Child Abuse or on 011 789 8815.
