THE City's revenue department is moving "lock, stock and barrel" to new customer-friendly premises with enough parking space.
In November, the department will move from its home at 66 Jorissen Place in Braamfontein, a few blocks down the road to Thuso House, at 61 Jorissen Street. The new offices are opposite the Sappi Theatre Gardens next to the Civic Theatre.
The move will take place over two weeks in November. The acting chief executive of the department, Roland Hunter, says about 450 people will be moving.
"The move was necessitated by the need for more space," he says. "A particular problem for us at our present building is that there is insufficient parking for the staff and the hundreds of customers who come here each month.
"In addition, there is insufficient space to create the kind of customer interface we want."
The move will benefit the department in a number of ways. Hunter says it will, among others, save through lower rentals and parking charges.
"We will also enjoy the synergy of various departments being located closely together. Finally, we are able to create a fantastic purpose-built environment for our customers."
The lower ground floor of the building will house finance, corporate services and customer liaison units. The rates hall on the upper ground floor is spacious; customers will be able to move easily between services. It will house cashiers and provide clearance and refund services.
"We have clustered all our customer functions to be easily accessible so that customers can easily move from one service to another, that is, from cashiers' desks to customer liaison desks to clearance certificate desks," Hunter explains.
Ample and secure parking for customers can be accessed from the Stiemens Street side of the building and a short walk down the parking ramp to the entrance on the same side will allow easy access to the Customer Service Centre.
Moving such a huge department is not an effortless task. About 160 000 files have to be moved and the communication system, essential to running the department, have to be kept functional during the process.
"Every effort has been made to ensure that there will be no interruption of services. We ask our customers to be patient during this period," Hunter adds.
All the boardrooms in the building will be named after Joburg suburbs. For example, the new finance section 80 meeting room will be called Braamfontein Room.
He has asked the public to take note of the following moving dates:
- Credit control, service recovery unit, community liaison and human resources will move on Thursday, 3 November and Friday, 4 November; and
- Cashiers, clearance certificates and refunds will move on Friday, 11 November and Saturday, 12 November.
