Record entries
for cycle challenge

A STAGGERING 28 000 cyclists have entered the Pick 'n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge, dubbed Joburg's safest race, making it the second biggest such event on the planet.

AS PROMISED, this year the Pick 'n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge will really be bigger and better - a record 28 000 cyclists have registered for the ninth annual race through Jozi.

Entries for Joburg's safest race, as it is dubbed, have closed, and the race takes place on Sunday, 20 November. It is endorsed by the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng provincial government.

"After less than a decade of phenomenal growth, Joburg's safest race is now bidding for the top spot on the planet," says Samantha Durkin, the event co-ordinator at organiser Harford Sports Promotions. "Only the Pick 'n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Tour in Cape Town is bigger in sheer numbers as a timed cycling event - and the gap is now narrowing fast."

She says the race offers everyone with those same desires and talents the perfect chance to test themselves and to display their success.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators and supporters are expected to line the streets and roads in and around Jozi.

This year the provincial department of transport, roads and works have given the go ahead for full road closure of the N14 highway. The race includes a 20 kilometre and a 40 kilometre mountain bike race, which will start and finish at the Kyalami racetrack.

The shorter route goes through the fields of the adjacent Leeukop Farm, while the 40km riders race through the beautiful countryside of the Inanda Country Base, home of the famous Rand Hunt horses and hounds.

The main cycle challenge route is the same as last year: the 94,7km race starts in Woodmead, next to Megawatt Park, runs through Houghton Estate, over the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein, up Jan Smuts Avenue, along Hans Strijdom Drive and through Diepsloot to finish at the AA Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand.

Professional riders who qualify ride an extended 180km route, leaving the regular route just before the turn on to the N14 on the Lanseria road, and rejoin the N14 Lanseria onramp after cycling an extra 85 kilometres towards Hartbeespoort.

On Saturday, 19 November the Children's Cycle Challenge takes place at the Kyalami racetrack.
