FASHIONISTAS have something to look forward to at the Newtown Diwali Festival on 22 October, when fashion students from the University of Johannesburg will hold a show featuring their designs.
The show is part of the Newtown Diwali Festival of Lights, which is being celebrated in the city for the first time. It has been themed, "The festival of light, celebration of life".
Indo-African designs, which blend Indian and African, traditional and modern, will be on show.
According to Sandhya Lallo, a fashion lecturer at the university and one of the festival co-ordinators, "The designs will have all the elements of enchantment, ranging from the traditional to the modern, a blend of cultures, whirling together a splash of Indo-African."
The show will be 25 minutes long, with five segments each running for five minutes.
"The first segment will be a traditional Indian show, because it actually takes time for one to put on the clothes - that is why we decided to start with it," Lallo explains.
"In the second segment the first-year students will showcase street-wise items. They will be followed by second-year students, who will be coming on stage with global fusion. The last part will be a parade from my own collection, called SIN."
The global fusion collection is a blend of several of the world's cultures, like Chinese, African and Indian, among others. Street-wise clothes are jeans, overalls and T-shirts.
Diwali, or Hindu new year, is also known as the festival of lights. It is celebrated worldwide by millions of devotees and spreads messages of joy, peace happiness, splendour and brightness.
The festival will be hosted by the City of Johannesburg in partnership with the Johannesburg Housing Company, Gauteng Indian Dance Alliance, Johannesburg Development Agency, arts and culture, the Newtown cultural precinct, the High Commission of India and the Consulate-General of India.
Entrance is free, and it starts at 11am with performances by community and cultural groups. The fashion show begins at 5pm.
