Mayor highlights
water projects

JOBURG will be upgrading the City's water and sanitation infrastructure over the coming year.

October 13, 2005

By Rose Setshoge

STILL wearing his orange workers' outfit after cleaning the streets of Yeoville, Executive Mayor Councillor Amos Masondo ended his day at Hursthill Reservoir by highlighting the importance of water.

The mayor's day began in Yeoville at 6.30am with a tour of the inner city. He even gave the Pikitup staffers a hand sweeping the streets.

Then, still in his bright overalls, it was on to the meeting with Johannesburg Water, where he guaranteed his support of the utility.

He appreciated the utility's efforts in supplying water to the city. "We need not take for granted the service that Johannesburg Water provides. One should visit Namibia to experience the issues of water that are in existence."

The City has set aside R600-million in the current financial year to upgrade and refurbish water and sanitary infrastructure.

A few of the major projects are Soweto's Operation Gcin'amanzi to upgrade municipal water infrastructure in the township, on which R262-million will be spent.

A total of R13-million will be invested for an alternative bulk water supply to Sandton and Alexandra.

In addition, R73-million will be used to rehabilitate water and sewer mains in areas like Carlsworld, Ivory Park, Bryanston, Edenburg, Morningside, Olivedale, Honeydew, Lenasia and Ennerdale.

New water and sewer infrastructure has been earmarked for Diepsloot, Kliptown, Braamfischerville, Driezak, Cosmo City, Leratong and Alexandra, worth R57-million.

Johannesburg Water provides water and sanitation services to the City, supplying more than one billion litres of water daily. It is responsible for ensuring that 900 million litres of water generated daily are treated to meet the high standards demanded by the national Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.

"The challenge [Joburg Water] is facing is service delivery to the community, as water is the main source of life," said Andries Tshabalala, the chairman of the utility's board of directors.

"However, we are dealing with it daily."
