CINDERELLA is a teenager who works in her wicked stepmother's house and has a dreary social life, but finally finds love at the prince's ball.
The Johannesburg Youth Theatre (JYT) has taken the classic tale by French author Charles Perrault and given it a contemporary spin for today's young audience.
The romantic fairytale is on at the theatre from Monday, 7 November.
"The show is designed to stimulate and draw the imagination of the audience rather than present the onlooker with the finished product in detail," says the theatre's media liaison officer, Sydwell Koopedi.
It combines humour, contemporary songs and lots of action to delight the entire family, he says. And the audience will be able to participate.
Koopedi explains that they will gain a sense of achievement as they will be able to give Cinders a hand with her chores, help her dress, draw the carriage to the palace, dance at the ball and even give directions to the actors.
"Four times a year, the JYT presents plays based on well-known classics," reads the theatre's website.
"These interactive tales delight, enchant and entertain, introducing children, their teachers and parents to the wonder and excitement of theatre."
Cinderella is the fourth production this year, following Puss in Boots, Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist and Little Bear, a play that taught children how to avoid sexual abuse.
According to its website, the theatre seeks subjects and stories that matter to young people, and brings them to life in a relevant and immediate way.
Cinderella will run from Monday, 7 November until Wednesday, 21 December, on Mondays to Saturdays. Performances are at 10.30am and 2.30pm.
The theatre is at 3 Junction Avenue in Parktown. It can be contacted on 011 484 1584/5 for further information or bookings. Tickets are R40 for children and R50 for adults.
Bookings can also be made through Computicket on 083 915 8000 or on the Computicket website.
