THE Proms is back! This year's Last Night of the Proms, in aid of LifeLine Johannesburg, has found a new venue, but the festivities and fine classical music remain the same.
This year's Proms will be held at the Linder Auditorium, Wits Education Campus, from Friday, 11 to Sunday, 13 November. Under the baton of Richard Cock, the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and the Symphony Choir of Johannesburg join forces in a rousing programme to get you into the summer holiday mood.
The Proms is known for its light-hearted and fun spirit, and this year is no exception.
Balloon races, singalongs and streamers are an essential part of the evening, as are the hundreds of flags waved throughout the performance. The concert's focus on popular classics means the music is recognisable and virtually everyone can hum along. The Proms also features young musical talent - keep an eye out for this year's surprise soloists.
The fun continues after the concert, with the traditional post-Proms street party with firedancers, full bar and a jazz band, so people can get down and boogie into the small hours.
Businesses are catered for at the Proms Corporate Gala Banquet, to be held on Saturday, 12 November, or informally at the Proms Pub 'n Grub evening on Friday.
LifeLine
Beneath the frothy festivities, however, is a more serious mission: to raise funds for LifeLine Johannesburg, which has centres in Norwood, Alexandra and Soweto, as well as satellite facilities.
LifeLine is far more than just a crisis line. It plays a fundamental role in all communities and at all levels, with corporate and individual training courses focusing on life skills. The ultimate outcomes are emotional intelligence, stress management, enhanced communication skills and self-empowerment.
It has operated in South Africa for about 36 years. From small beginnings, there are now 19 centres and 14 satellite and outreach centres countrywide. Nationally, the LifeLine 24-hour crisis lines receive a call every three minutes, day and night.
Specialist rape and trauma counselling teams are available around the clock, providing on-the-spot support.

In addition to direct counselling, LifeLine Johannesburg trains some 125 new counsellors every year and its life skills division runs training courses on communication, basic counselling, stress management and self-improvement for businesspeople and individuals.
This year the Last Night of the Proms, in aid of LifeLine Johannesburg, is running without a title sponsor. The organisation is calling on everyone to be proactive and lend their support by buying tickets for the event. Every ticket sold makes a difference.
