Vuyani Week back
at Dance Factory

THE annual Vuyani Week is back at the Dance Factory in Newtown, with works based on the play Beautiful Us.

By Rose Setshoge

VUYANI Dance Theatre is to put its dynamic dancers through their paces at the annual Vuyani Week at the Dance Factory in Newtown. The troupe expresses its various cultural backgrounds through dance and theatre.

This year Vuyani Week, which runs from 17 to 20 November, is based on a play called Beautiful Us. However, other works are featured, like 24th Street and an extract from Rhythm Colour.

"This event aims to communicate a message across cultures through the dance language," said Sikho Malinga, the Vuyani Dance Theatre manager.

There are five performances in the week - on 17, 18 and 19 November at 8pm, and on 19 and 20 November at 2.30 pm.

The Vuyani Dance Theatre works with a number of other dance groups, including Batsogile, Kliptown Our Town Youth Service, the Young Explorers Dance Company from Alexandra and Sizwile School for the Deaf in Dobsonville.

Rehearsals are on 5 and 19 November at the Dance Factory. Performances feature Gregory Maqoma, Shawn Mothupi, Tebogo Tlhale, Dillonne Prince, Smolly Mashita and Melusi Mkhanjane.

In preparation for the week, free two-hour classes will be open to the public from 1 to 11 November. Vuyani Week is supported by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and Africalia.

Tickets, at R45, are available at the door. Pensioners and students pay R25, and block bookings for groups of 10 or more can be made at R15 per person.
