IF A poor maths mark may scupper your chances of going to university, the University of Johannesburg is giving you a second chance.
Prospective students who would like to register for tertiary education but do not meet the required mathematics symbol, can take Wisblitz, an intensive Grade 12 higher grade mathematics course.
According to the university's website, matriculants need an E symbol for maths higher grade or a minimum of a B for maths standard grade to qualify for the Wisblitz course.
Now being offered for the sixth year, the course will be presented at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus from 3 to 21 January next year. It focuses on the most important aspects of the Grade 11 and Grade 12 mathematics syllabus, giving prospective students the background necessary to do university maths courses and courses based on maths.
"The most important sections of the Grade 11 and 12 mathematics curriculum will be handled in this course, which extends over three weeks and serves as an alternative to the one-year fundamental mathematics course," according to the University's media relations division in its marketing, communication and strategic partnerships department.
A pass mark of 50 percent in the Wisblitz course equals the same admission as a D symbol on higher grade for Grade 12 maths in the faculties of science, engineering and economic and management sciences.
Registration will be open on 3 and 4 January from 7.30am to 8.45am and again from 12pm to 12.45pm at the department of statistics and mathematics, C-Ring 510, Orange Block.
Lectures will be presented from Mondays to Fridays, from 9am to 12 noon and between 1pm and 3pm, and again on Saturdays from 7.30am to 10am and from 10.30am to 1pm. Tutors will be available at lunchtimes for consultations.
"The programme is very helpful because students will not have to wait for another year to improve their symbols," explains Betsie Jonck, the deputy head of statistics and mathematics. "This course allows a successful student to start his or her university career that same year."
After completing the course, students write exams on 25 January.
Although the lectures are presented in English, questions that are asked in Afrikaans are answered in Afrikaans.
According to the university website, the course costs about R2 000, payable at registration. Inquiries can be addressed to the department of statistics and mathematics on 011 489 2848 or on 011 489 2459.
