Spend Mother's
Day at the zoo

THE annual Mother's Day Concert at the Johannesburg Zoo again promises to be a relaxing and fun-filled day for the whole family.

May 6, 2005

By Anish Abraham

SUNDAY is Mother's Day, and to the celebrate the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra will be playing light classics at the Johannesburg Zoo - the perfect place to take your mother for a relaxing and entertaining picnic.

The Mother's Day Concert, hosted by Talk Radio 702 and BP Express, will feature entertainers Ian Von Memerty, Prince Lengoasa and Vicky Goddard singing golden oldies like Ain't That a Kick in the Head, Fly Me to the Moon, and Mr Bojangles, among others. The orchestra will be conducted by Richard Cock.

The concert has been a prominent annual feature on the Joburg arts calendar since 1991 - a "not to be missed family day", say the organisers.

There also will be entertainment laid on for younger children, with carousels, jumping castles, face painters and stilt walkers, as well as painting, colouring and making art.

Fittingly, entrance is free for mothers, while fathers have to pay R30 and children R18. The concert starts at 12pm and ends at 3pm.

While at the zoo, why not take a walk around the enclosures: visit the new Heart of Africa with the recently renovated ape houses, as well as those firm family favourites, the lions and polar bears.

For more information, contact the zoo on 011 646 2000.
