Diepsloot to
host career expo

YOUNGSTERS from Diepsloot will be able to get information on careers, funding and tertiary institutions at a career expo at Diepsloot Youth Centre.

May 5, 2005

By Ndaba Dlamini

PUPILS in the sprawling township of Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, can look forward to an informative career exhibition that will help them decide on how to prepare for the future.

The career expo, to be hosted by top institutions, will take place over two days from Friday, 6 May at the Diepsloot Youth Centre. It was targeted at pupils in grades 10, 11 and 12 and would feature tertiary institutions, professional organisations and government departments, said Charles Maboya, from the library and information services department for Region 1, the organisers of the event.

"The exhibitors will include the University of the Witwatersrand, Tshwane University of Technology, the Anne Latsky Nursing College, Damelin, the Departments of Defence, Labour and Education, and Umsobomvu," Maboya said. "These exhibitors will help students identify possible careers and career opportunities that exist in their organisations."

The exhibitors will also help pupils get access to tertiary institutions and fill out application forms for these institutions. "We have specifically asked educational institutions to bring application forms because most pupils have difficulties in accessing these forms - and sometimes they do not have an idea where these institutions are located. This expo will bring these institutions closer to them," Maboya said.

The exhibition aims to help youngsters from poor families who cannot afford tertiary education. Maboya said there would also be information on various funding sources for tertiary education from different organisations and government departments.

"We realised that the career expo would be the ideal event for prospective graduates to meet experienced career guidance teachers who will assist them in choosing careers relevant to subjects that they are doing at school. The exhibitors will also give out information brochures," he said.

The career exhibition, the first of its kind in Diepsloot, is also open to parents. It is open from 9am to 4pm on Friday and Saturday. For more information contact Charles Maboya on 011 464 6001.
