Lower tariff increases
bring relief to ratepayers

TARIFF increases are lower than initially proposed. Ratepayers will pay an average 5,6 percent more for municipal services in July.

By JoNews Reporter

RATEPAYERS are facing tariff increases of 5,6 percent in Johannesburg, lower than the 6,2 percent increase that was initially proposed.

Delivering the City's budget on Wednesday, 25 May, Johannesburg Executive Mayor Councillor Amos Masondo said the proposed increases had been dropped following representation from members of the public.

The Municipal Systems Act requires municipalities to review their tariffs annually and to involve the public in deciding on amendments to existing tariffs.

The increases are:

  • Water and Sanitation: 7,7 percent
  • Property Rates: 4 percent
  • Electricity: 6,2 percent
  • Refuse Removal: 4,7 percent
Councillor Parks Tau, the member of the mayoral committee responsible for finance, strategy and economic development, said the City had no choice but to increase its tariffs to keep up with inflation.

"It is necessary. We are expected to increase staff salaries. Our bulk purchases from Eskom and Rand Water will also increase, so the cost of service provision is also inflationary."

The increases come into effect on 1 July.
