EXPECT a fun-filled day at the Hillfox Market on Saturday, 21 May: there will be a fire engine to investigate, a colouring-in competition for the little ones and photo displays of the work done by Johannesburg's Emergency Management Services (EMS).
There is a more serious side to the day's activities, however, and the EMS will give lessons on basic safety as part of the City's pre-winter Fire Awareness Day.
As temperatures start to drop, out come the woollies, together with all manner of heating appliances - and fires - to make the nights and early mornings more bearable.
It is mostly those appliances that lead to accidental fires, which cause injury and even death. The awareness day is held to draw people's attention to the additional dangers of fire that winter holds.
Malcolm Midgley, the EMS spokesperson, says, "We will be featuring a static display of EMS trucks and fire engines, as well as teaching mainly children about basic emergency, safety and fire education."
State of the art firefighting equipment used by the EMS will be on display, and people will be able to learn about safety at home and in the workplace. Pamphlets containing useful information will be handed out.
Issues that will be discussed will include the dangers of fires, illegal electricity connection, construction sites and uncovered manholes.
Harry Annandale, the Station Commander in the EMS's Public Education, Information and Relations department, says, "We will also teach children to make proper use of the City's emergency numbers." The emergency services number is 011 375 5911.
Though the Awareness Day is targeted at children and adults, Annandale says children are the main focus as they are the ones who show the most interest.
Such awareness campaigns are part of an ongoing effort by the City's emergency services to educate people on how to deal with crises.
According to B&B Markets, owners of Hillfox Market, the Fire Awareness Day is a continuation of the longstanding relationship between the company and the EMS, promoting safety while educating city residents.
There will also be a wide variety of activities in which younger children can take part.
The awareness day is at the Hillfox Market, Hendrik Potgieter Road, Weltevreden Park, on Saturday, 21 May, and runs from about 11am to 3.30pm.
