Didier Awadi is in
the house at the Bassline

SENEGAL'S Didier Awadi is in South Africa on his African Presidents tour, and will perform at the Bassline with local acts like Skwatta Kamp and Proverb.

By Lucky Sindane

SENEGALESE rapper Didier Awadi - the featured artist in the African Presidents hip-hop tour - will be in the groove at the Bassline in Newtown on Saturday, 14 May.

Supporting the artist are top South African kwaito and rap outfits Skwatta Kamp, Prokid, Proverb and Nomadyi. The gig kicks off at 8pm.

Awadi will perform in 13 African countries on the African Presidents tour. The tour is hosted by the French Institute and Yfm and aims to highlight African history through the life of famous leaders and events.

A musician and businessman, Awadi combines modern technology with the traditional culture of his ancestors, feeding this powerful mix into his dynamic rap. He has created a genre of music based on his own roots yet linked to raising consciousness.

It is planned to turn the speeches of various African leaders into song on the African Presidents project, thereby creating an interactive dialogue with rap artists. Through the music, the artists will explore the question: where are all these dreams today? While in South Africa, Awadi will collaborate with Skwatta Kamp, exploring this theme.

Tickets for the Bassline concert are available from Computicket, and they cost R70. For more information contact Peggy on 011 836 0561.
