JP Morgan race

THE JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge is being run in Joburg, just one stop on its 18-event schedule. The global celebration of fitness includes races in 15 cities on five continents. Organisers hope for 8 000 entrants in 2005.

THOUSANDS of runners are to take to the streets in the suburbs of Joburg when the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge road race starts at 6.30pm on 3 March, 2005.

The race's organisers say the 2005 Series will feature "18 events in 15 cities in six countries on five continents, making the Corporate Challenge a truly global celebration of camaraderie and fitness".

Participants can run, jog or walk in the challenge, which has already been held successfully in Houston and Sydney. This is the second time it is being held in Johannesburg, which, along with Singapore, is the only host to have attracted more than 6 000 entrants in the first year.

Organisers are optimistic that this year's event will attract more than 8 000 entrants.

Funds raised will used to help the Sparrow Schools Education Trust, an organisation based in Johannesburg that works with disadvantaged children.

One of its initiatives is the Foundation School, where 380 disadvantaged children between the ages of seven and 14 who suffer from learning disabilities are schooled. More than 400 previously disadvantaged children receive technical and vocational skills training at the Sparrow Combined School.

The race starts at the Wanderers Club at North Road in Illovo. To ensure the entrants' safety, organisers have worked with the Johannesburg Metro Police to close off several roads.
