THE City of Johannesburg has published proposed tariff increases for the 2005/2006 financial year, averaging six percent, for public comment.
If accepted, the new tariffs will come into effect on 1 July 2005. Residents are invited to raise objections.
The Municipal Systems Act requires municipalities to review their tariffs annually and to involve the public in deciding on amendments to existing tariffs.
The proposed increases are:
- Electricity 6.2%
- Water 7.7%
- Assessment rates 6%
- Refuse Removal 4,7%
All other tariffs will increase by between 3% and 5%.
Increases in electricity tariffs are subject to approval from the National Electricity Regulator.
Objections to the proposed increases can be addressed to: The City Manager, PO Box 1049, Johannesburg 2000, or emailed to zandileT@joburg.org.za. Written submissions can also be dropped off at any People's Centre around the city.
The following are the detailed increases proposed for individual city departments and UACs:
- Rental increases to bring Alexandra Flats in line with the value of the properties
- Emergency Management Service charges to go up by five percent
- Arts, culture and heritage facilities
- Assessment rate, rebates on and remissions of assessment rate
- The Biokinetic Centre in Roodepoort
- City Power's proposed tariffs for electricity services
- Costs to landlords for copies of statements of their tenants' accounts
- Ratepayers to be charged R150 for payments not honoured by the banks
- Environmental health services
- Water and sanitation services are to go up by 4,7%
- Entrance fees for the Johannesburg Zoo
- Library service charges up by five percent
- Metrobus fares to increase by six percent
- Documents and services from Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department
- Land Development and Building Plan Applications, National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, Advertising Signs and Hoardings
- Refuse removal
- Sport facilities, recreation centres and swimming pools
- Tariffs for the use of cemeteries, crematoria and parks
- Montessori Crèche in Alexandra to be upgraded into a community facility
- Street encroachments, reinstatements and printed material charges
- Issuing Of Certicates And Furnishing Of Information By Corporate Services
