Easter weekend
music line-up

THIS long weekend catch the ever-popular "Handel's Messiah" with the Joburg Festival Orchestra, but if you prefer your entertainment more upbeat, Windybrow is the place to be.

By Tabisa Mntengwana

IT IS going to be a musical weekend this Easter, with classical music by the orchestra and township jive at Windybrow.

"Handel's Messiah" at Nelson Mandela Square
It is traditional to perform "Handel's Messiah" at Easter and this year the Symphony Choir of Johannesburg and the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra will perform the concert at Nelson Mandela Square, in Sandton, on Easter Sunday, 27 March at 5pm.

This year more than 200 people are expected to attend the concert, which has been running for 21 years. It will be conducted by Richard Cock, with soloists Hanali Stapela, Nicholas Nicolaidis and Andre Howard.

Profits from the concert will be donated to Women for Peace, a non-profit organisation that aims to empower grassroots communities with employment opportunities, life and vocational skills, literacy training, craft training, catering and nutrition, and conflict management.

Hymns to be performed at the concert include "The People that Walked in the Darkness", "Behold the Lamb of God", "Surely He hath borne our Griefs" and many others.

For more information, call Sonia Bull on 072 196 7628.

"Diphala" at Windybrow Centre for the Arts
Celebrate the long weekend with an evening of music and dance at Windybrow, in Hillbrow, with the Molepo Theatre Project musical "Diphala". Using the music of the 1960s to express their emotions towards South Africa, the actors turn in a vibrant performance and the audience will be reminded of penny whistle legends like Spokes Mashiane, Lemmy Mabaso and others. Although "Diphala" uses music of the past, the focus is firmly on the present.

The musical was written by Mpho Molepo and is performed by John Lata, Molelekoa Pheko and Arthur Molepo, who is also the director. The first performance was on Monday, 21 March, with other shows on 25 March and 1 and 2 April, at 8.30pm.

For more information and bookings, call the Windybrow Centre for the Arts on 011 720 7009.
