PIKITUP, the City's waste management service provider, has implemented a weighbridge system at all its landfill sites to speed turnaround times.
"Our weighbridge control system enables us to verify quickly vehicles and the amount of waste they are carrying. It also frees up other weighbridges which can then be used by non-Pikitup vehicles," said Dave Harris, Pikitup's general manager for disposal.
He said Pikitup was the first such company in South Africa to incorporate weighbridge technologies like wireless GPRS (generalised packet radio service), transponder tags and foolproof RFID (radio frequency identification) cards.
The weighbridge's RFID chip technology uses radio waves to communicate relevant information to Pikitup drivers' cards each morning. These cards are also linked to the company's WinBridge database, which again links them to a specific waste category and depot.
The weighbridge is like a scanner; it has a transponder tag which is attached to all Pikitup and third party vehicles. This tag is used to identify automatically the vehicle and its relevant tare mass, after which the gross mass is determined by weighbridge instrumentation.
"This is necessary to bill customers accurately, therefore not only ensuring consistency but also adhering to important legislative requirements," said Harris.
Marius de Villiers, the Pikitup spokesperson, said the weighbridge system was linked to the company's head office. The general manager for disposal, who monitors the daily running of the landfill sites, could get access to the information using a cellphone or a computer.
