SHOUTS of delight greeted the 240 new metro police officers as they paraded for the residents of Soweto after an official graduation ceremony at Thokoza Park in Rockville on 21 June.

"We've brought the parade to the community so they can see the officers who serve them," said Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar.

The recruits - from Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and the Govan Mbeki municipality in Secunda, Mpumalanga - all completed a gruelling six-month training course, which was held in Johannesburg under the auspices of the JMPD.

During the graduation ceremony in Soweto on Tuesday, each recruit was presented with a diploma. Awards were also given to the best legal student, the best policing student, the best shottist, the best academic student, the best practical student, and the best overall student.

"We are grateful to have a dedicated and committed team of men and women who seek to serve all our people and communities with distinction," said Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Amos Masondo, in his keynote address.

He urged the metro police to uphold the ethics and moral code of the JMPD. "Do us proud - as many of your colleagues have already done."

After the presentation of awards, the chief of Johannesburg's metro police Chris Ngcobo led the new officers who through their oath of office.

"Welcome to the uniform club, once you start something it has to be finished," he said, adding, "I must warn you that if you take jojo (bribes) our internal affairs will deal with you. We must serve our community in a good manner."

After the marching off parade the new officers threw their hats into the air and began to sing with pride.

"It's been very hard for me, I missed my son and my family," said Thandi Ndaba, one of three graduates from the Govan Mbeki municipality.

"But I also want to thank the JMPD for giving us this opportunity," she added. "We have learned a lot."
