THE festive season may still be several months away, but the City of Johannesburg is already preparing to "light up the city, African style".
The City is calling on local artists to enter its Festive Lights Competition, to design lights that will be put up across Joburg during the December holiday period. The competition runs from 9 June to 30 June, with the theme "Festive in Africa".
The grand prize is a whopping R50 000. Local artists can design either street pole banners or rope lightning.
"The City would like to make this opportunity available to local artists, encouraging them to showcase their talent by designing either rope lighting or street pole banners," says Bev Swartz, the City's economic development, tourism and marketing brand manager.
Artists are urged to stretch their creative juices to the max. "They can do rope lighting for up to five or six kilometres, or street pole banners relating to the theme."
The luminescent artworks will complement the lights that are put on show during the festive season each year. Johannesburg already boasts a cluster of six 17m star lights, four kilometres of rope lighting and a 12m-high Christmas tree.
The winning lights will be placed around the city. All entries should include the designer's name, email, postal address and daytime contact phone number.
Postal entries can be addressed to Rose Mokaba, City of Johannesburg, Department of Economic Development, Marketing and Tourism, Fifth Floor, Jorisson Place, 66 Jorisson Street, Braamfontein.
Email entries can be sent to festivelights@joburg.org.za
