Celebrate environment
day early, at the zoo

SCHOOL children are invited to spend the day at the zoo for an early celebration of World Environment Day.

June 2, 2005

By Tabisa Mntengwana

SCHOOL children are invited to enjoy a day out with the animals to commemorate World Environment Day.

Held annually on 5 June, the Johannesburg Zoo is celebrating the day early, organising an event for children at the zoo on Friday, 3 June at 10am.

The event is a joint venture by the zoo, Delta Park, Random Harvest, the national Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, LoveLife and Food and Trees for Africa. The theme is Green Cities.

On the cards on Friday are loads of activities, like environmental exhibitions, visits to the animal enclosures, competitions and educational and informative presentations.

These will focus on the importance of trees, the role of plants and the identification of indigenous and exotic trees.

World Environment Day is set aside to commemorate and grow awareness of the environment. The day coincides with National Environment Week, which runs from Wednesday, 1 June to Monday, 6 June.

According to the zoo's educationist, Lawrence Tshokgohle, the day is used to promote the importance of nature and other environmental issues, "and also to inspire the school children to love and respect nature".

The zoo is expecting more than 1 000 people, including schools, to be part of the festivities. In competitions on the day, schools can win prizes such as plants to the value of R10 000; individuals can win stationery worth R1 000.

"There are so many other green prizes to be won, we encourage people to come and be part of the fun."

Entrance is R12 for each child in a school group; normal rates apply to individuals. For more information, contact Lawrence Tshokgohle on 011 646 2000 ext 262.
