THE Russians are coming to Joburg this winter.
Soloists from several Russian ballet companies are bound to dazzle Joburg audiences with their performances of scenes from some of the most familiar, and loved, classical ballets.
Put together by a former director of the legendary Bolshoi Ballet, Yuri Velrov, Stars of the Ballet Moscow includes dancers from the Bolshoi Ballet, the Moscow State Classical Ballet, the Moscow Kremlin Ballet and the Ballet of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko.
The show commemorates the 165th birthday of Russian composer PI Tchaikovsky, whose scores for Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty have become part of the iconography of ballet.
"We trust these performances will celebrate the anniversary of the Great Russian composer in style," says the show's promoter, Edwards Mainikov.
Included are excerpts from the three great ballets, offering ballet lovers "a unique opportunity to see all this in one performance".
"Tchaikovsky created masterpieces and brilliant music pieces for ballet. His masterpieces have been enjoyed for generations and his music continues to mesmerise to this day," Mainikov adds.
Stars of the Ballet Moscow will be on at the Nelson Mandela Theatre at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre complex, from 21 to 24 July.
Tickets are available from Computicket, from R91, excluding the booking fee. Discounts are offered to groups of 10 or more and are available through the VIP ticket line on 011 877 6854.
