Arts Alive pulls out all stops

FROM dance to poetry, from comedy to the legendary Jazz on the Lake, this year Arts Alive promises the best entertainment yet.

July 7, 2005

By Tammy O'Reilly

THIS year the Arts Alive International Festival promises to be an extravaganza, with music, dance, art, poetry, stand-up comedy and theatre on the bill.

From Thursday, 1 September to Sunday, 4 September, the most anticipated event on Johannesburg's entertainment calendar will take place at venues in Newtown and other parts of the city.

Already in its fourteenth year, the City is the key sponsor of Arts Alive and promises quality entertainment for the masses.

Day one kicks off with the Festival of Dance, which features acclaimed South African dancer Gregory Maqoma and Senegal's Germain Acogny at the Dance Factory, and the play Sophiatown at the Market Theatre. Both venues are in Newtown.

Over at Carfax - 39 Pim Street, Newtown - DJ Fresh, DJ Monde and DJ Naked turn up the heat with the latest house and dance tracks on Friday, 2 September. They make way for South Africa's very own diva, Lebo Mathosa.

Day three of the festival has been set aside for the Jozi Spring Celebration at Mary Fitzgerald Square. It is a fun-filled family day featuring music, a flea market with the latest art and crafts, a beer garden and plenty of entertainment for the kids.

That night Bassline hosts some of Johannesburg's top comedians, as well as a few surprise artists.

However, the highlight of the four-day festival is still the ever-popular Jazz on the Lake. As usual, it takes place on the last day of the festival at Zoo Lake.

Thousands of people usually turn up for the free concert. With the likes of Simpiwe Dana, Gloria Bosman and Judith Sepuma performing, this year is expected to be no different.

There is also something in store for rock fans. Jozi Rocks features the country's best rock musicians, like Arno Carstens, Wonderboom, Cutting Jade and Karen Zoid.

Finally, each year Arts Alive secures a major international act. Although the artist is unconfirmed, Johannesburg Stadium is the confirmed venue.
