Zasekhaya Market
open for business

THE Zasekhaya Market at the Bus Factory in Newtown is filled with unusual art and crafts, to buy or browse.

July 26, 2005

By Buhle Makabane

IT IS once again time to go shopping in Newtown for unusual, handcrafted treasures at the Zasekhaya Market.

The next market day is on Saturday, 30 July at the Bus Factory, where stalls will be open from 10am to 3pm. The market caters for browsers and serious shoppers alike, with loads to look at and to buy.

"Unlike other markets, where goods sold are limited to those on display, here the public can interact with real crafters and place orders for specially designed, handmade goods to fit their needs," explains Frank Ledimo, the general manager of the Bus Factory. "For me, this is ground breaking."

The monthly Zasekhaya Market started three months ago and has been growing ever since, with more and more stalls and traders coming on board each market day.

This month shoppers will be able to buy a wide range of jewellery, handmade felt toys, paper, musical instruments, clothing, glasswork, beaded items and other traditional crafts.

Several art and craft organisations based at the Bus Factory will also have work on sale, including Vaca, Imbali, Ikageng, the Artist Proof Studio, the Craft Council of South Africa and the Drum Café.

There is safe parking on the Bus Factory premises, in President Street, Newtown.

The Zasekhaya Market is open on the last Saturday of every month, namely 30 July, 27 August, 24 September, 29 October and 26 November.
