CALLING all young aspiring actors for a once in a lifetime opportunity. Auditions are being held for Pinocchio - and that's no lie.

The People's Theatre, at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, is holding auditions for parts in the upcoming production of the much-loved children's classic, and youngsters are needed for the roles of Pinocchio, Candlewick and three puppets, Harlequin, Columbine and Pantelone.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will give a few lucky young actors the chance to get both training and experience, with the help of two stalwarts of children's theatre, Keith Smith and Jill Girard.

"The People's Theatre is aiming to develop young talent," says the theatre's publicist, Jacqui Khourie, "and this is another way of developing these youngsters."

Auditions will take place at the People's Theatre in Braamfontein on Wednesday, 2 February from 2pm to 4pm.

"We are casting two children per role and, depending on their performance, another day for auditions may be set aside," says Khourie.

No formal training or professional acting experience is required, but parents are asked to accompany their children to the auditions.

Pinocchio, the story of the little wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy, opens on 28 February.
