CowParade comes
to the City of Gold

AFTER touring the country from coast to coast, the well-travelled cow herd will be stopping in Joburg until May. It's not just an exhibition, however - the beautiful bovines also will be raising cash for children with cancer.

JOIN in the fun and celebrate life, all while raising money for children with cancer, when CowParade comes to Johannesburg.

CowParade, an international art exhibition of life-sized fibreglass cows, has travelled through more than 25 cities worldwide, from Chicago and New York to Houston and London.

It's also been on the road across South Africa, from Durban to Cape Town. Johannesburg is now on its route, and CowParade will be visiting the city from Sunday, 13 February to Tuesday, 31 May 2005.

Born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1998, the aim of the project was to encourage people to visit the city, and it worked - more than one million people turned up to look at the cows.

In Joburg, the cows will be on display at Constitution Hill, in Sandton City, at Nelson Mandela Square and at Gold Reef City. The money raised will go to CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Cash will be raised by corporates paying to adopt a particular cow, public donations on kulula.com flights, or simply dropped in the Cash Cows that will be at designated areas.

CHOC helps children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders, helping to ease the load on their parents.

"The money raised in this campaign will be given to CHOC, to help children and families that are affected by cancer - we are happy to be associated with CHOC," said Zoë Jewel, the CowParade event co-ordinator.

Several international artists, including Peter Max, Patrick Hughes and David Lynch, have painted the cows, all of which are brightly coloured and rather beautiful, some grazing, some with their heads up to watch the passing show, and others lying down for a rest.

Activities happening in Joburg while the cows are in the city include:

  • 13 February: the first day of public viewing at Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton;
  • 15 February: International Childhood Cancer Day;
  • 17 February to 28 March: the cows will be at Lifestyle Family Garden Centre, Randpark Ridge;
  • 19 and 20 February: the cows will be at Bruma Market World and Kids World;
  • 21 and 22 February: the cows will arrive at Constitution Hill and Gold Reef City;
  • 14 to 22 May: the cows will return to Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square; and
  • 31 May: the gala auction at Nedbank's office in Sandton.

The cows have become an eye-catching attraction around the world, and a number of celebrities and royalty have bought their own, including Oprah Winfrey, Elton John, the Queen of Jordan and Lord Hesseltine.

For the campaign's grand finale, a public auction by Stephan Welz/Sotheby and an Internet auction, aimed at local and international collectors, have been planned.

Cell C and kulula.com are sponsoring the parade.

"CowParade will definitely attract visitors in all the venues, especially to shopping centres," said Jewel. "We have started moving the cows into their positions at Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square and the crowds can't help but stop and look at these beautiful bovines."
