THE OPENING of the Gauteng Legislature by Premier Mbhazima Shilowa on Monday, 21 February, promises to be a spectacular affair - and members of the public have been invited to join in the celebrations.

The proceedings will be broadcast live from public spaces across the province, enabling ordinary people to be part of the event, says the provincial government.

In Johannesburg, Shilowa's address will be shown live at the Baragwanath Taxi Rank and at Park Station. The event will also receive wide coverage from radio stations. Kaya FM and YFM will have outside broadcasts and live crossings to the ceremony inside the legislature.

Other stations accredited to cover the proceedings are Lesedi FM, Motsweding FM, East Rand Stereo, East Wave Stereo, George Mukhari (Ga-Rankuwa) Community Radio, Jozi FM, Soshanguve Community Radio, Rainbow FM, Radio Islam, Radio TNG, The Voice and Vaal Community Radio.

A free music festival, featuring several kwaito acts including Mandoza and Ghetto Lingo, at Johannesburg's Mary Fitzgerald Square, will be a highlight of the day.

The legislature is opening as the province mulls over the feasibility of positioning itself as a global city region, with municipalities integrating their activities for the common good.

"Shilowa is expected to review progress in achieving the objectives set out in the provincial government's five-year programme last year as well as outline the programme for the year ahead," says the provincial government.

With the province preparing to adopt a five-year Provincial Growth Strategy, the premier also will touch on proposals to stimulate the economy, reduce poverty and unemployment, promote small business and improve the quality of education and health care.

Proceedings will begin at 10am.
