A BLACK economic empowerment (BEE) group contracted by Pikitup a year ago to service Orange Farm has been such a success that the City's waste removal utility has extended the contract for another five years.
Under the R4-million-a-year contract, Thutukani Group will service nearly 45 000 points in Orange Farm, in the far south region of Johannesburg.
The five-member contractor previously made history as the first fully BEE partnership signed by Pikitup to collect refuse and to keep streets clean.
Jeremy Deysel, the communications officer at Pikitup, explains that it was "a third-party contract that was put out to tender". Such initiatives, he adds, form part of Pikitup's aim to deliver a better service to its clients.
Thutukani Group also services Stretford, Drieziek, Lakeside and Poortjie - all in Johannesburg's Region 11. The compactor the group recently bought has given operations a boost, adding to its fleet of tractors and other equipment and vehicles.
Similo Dingaan, the operations executive at Pikitup, says, "Thutukani Group is indeed a BEE success story. The company's achievements have been noteworthy and we are absolutely thrilled that in only one year it has managed to sign major deals."
