NEW Year is a time for new beginnings, so what better time to start construction of the new regional offices of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD)?
Construction of the metro police one-stop shop in Dube, Soweto, starts in January and is expected to be completed by April 2006.
The new premises, based at the vocational municipal offices, are bound to ease the life of local people. At present they rely on police offices on the outskirt of the township.
"The existing offices in Nancefield are 50 kilometres away from the people they are supposed to serve and protect," explained Ronnie Molao, the deputy director of the metro police.
"[The construction] is driven by the City's service delivery plan and attempts to bring services closer to the people."
He said the metro police's Region 10 regional commando and senior staff would be stationed at the Dube offices. The current zonal policing offices, which are based in Klipspruit, would be shut down as soon as the Dube offices were available for occupation.
JMPD staff working at the Meadowlands court would be relocated to the new offices as their present offices were not big enough, Molao said.
The one-stop shop will be open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. They will be open to all Joburgers to register motor vehicles and renew their driver's licences. Other services at the offices will include court administration, prosecution processes and reporting accidents.
"Dube is in a central place and is easily accessible. The 1,8 million vehicle owning population that resides in Soweto will not have to travel very far, and even when using public transport, the place is still user friendly," Molao said.
"The vocational municipal offices are currently unoccupied and are owned by the City of Johannesburg. The development will cost R3,85-million."
At the premises there also will be a Johannesburg emergency services training centre and a driver education centre that will focus on teaching children the rules on of the road and road safety. A parade ground is also planned.
