THE level of road accidents in South Africa has long been a cause for concern, especially over the festive season. With this in mind, the Gauteng department of community safety has launched a Safe4Life campaign to ensure that road users are safe at all times.
Safe4Life was officially launched by MEC for Community Safety Firoz Cachalia on Monday, 5 December.
Previously known as Drive4Life, the campaign has been improved to boost road safety awareness of all road users, with the main focus on pedestrians. The campaign's full title is now Drive4Life + Walk4Life + Cycle4Life = Safe4Life.
"The main focus of the campaign will be on pedestrian safety as pedestrian road fatalities are in excess of 50 percent of all road fatalities in the province," Cachalia said.
"We are pledging our support from all tiers of government to this campaign; we need all road users to do the same. This is a partnership approach and together we can assist in reducing the road fatalities in Gauteng."
The MEC said the provincial government aimed to reduce road accidents by 32 percent over five years. Last year only a 2 percent reduction was achieved.
At the launch Cachalia, taxi associations, drivers and metro police officers pledged their support of the campaign. Their signatures will be engraved on a plaque to commemorate the pledge.
"We are hoping to work closely with taxi associations, especially drivers, to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that drivers are courteous on the road," Cachalia concluded.
The launch was followed by an advanced driving lesson and anti-hijacking course for the guests.
