DISABLED children were given a fabulous party by City Parks at the Johannesburg Botanical Garden on Tuesday, International Day of the Disabled Person.

The City of Johannesburg also declared November Month of the Child. The party was held to join the day and the month, by highlighting the importance of developing and nurturing user-friendly environments for disabled children.

Celebrities from radio and television, Orlando Pirates soccer stars, dignitaries, councillors and kwaito musician were also at the party, including Zola, Doctor Khumalo, Mdu and Ashifa Shaba.

City Parks has adopted the initiative as part of its strategic vision to ensure that all its outdoor recreation facilities are made accessible to all.

"Disabled children are not socially excluded," said Jenny Moodley, the marketing and communications manager.

The party was also part of City Parks' festive programme, enabling it to host disabled children who rarely, if ever, were able to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the botanical garden.

About 358 children and their caretakers enjoyed the day. They were from Sunsine Homes in Eldorado Park, Craighall and Soweto, Eyethu, Nkanyezi, Ratanang, Mthimkhulu, Vutomi Inyiko, Kopanang, Tumelo Home for the Handicapped in Midrand, Tebogo, Pillsburry and the Harvey Cohen Home, among others.

"I am happy that City Parks is doing this for the children, especially during Christmas time," said Busisiwe Mdluli, a caregiver at Ujama School of Excellence in Diepkloof. Clowns and magicians entertained the children, and there was a surprise visit from Father Christmas.

"We feel happy that there are people who care about disabled children," said Orina Thindisa, the manager of the Tumelo Home.

Her colleague, Linah Maluleke, the founder of Vutomi Inyiko, said the children were not used to such a noisy environment but it was good for the change of scenery.

Christine Walters, mayoral committee member for social development, said, "We are encouraging people to embrace the spirit of ubuntu."

The City is hopeful that the event will increase community awareness of disabled people and act as a catalyst in reinforcing the culture ubuntu in society.

It has developed a Human Development Strategy as a framework for the City council to deal with issues such as poverty, inequality and social exclusion. People with disabilities face physical and social exclusion that is often compounded by poverty.
