Soweto Arts
Festival in full swing

KICKING off the last fortnight before Christmas, the Soweto Arts Festival is chock-full of art, music, film and dance.

THERE is something for everyone at the third annual Soweto Arts Festival, from kwaito to hip-hop, from theatre to film and dance.

The party is already on and the festival runs until Sunday, 18 December. It was established in 2003 to promote the arts through music, crafts, theatre, visual arts, performing arts and film.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Charter, one of the aims of the festival is to teach people, the youth in particular, to love their people and their culture and to honour human brotherhood, liberty and peace.

"This year's festival is bigger and better. Last year the festival attracted an estimated 20 000 people and we expect that number to increase," said Johannesburg Concerts administrator Mpho Moshapalo.

Highlights this year include jazz, heritage and crafts at the Mofolo Cultural Bowl in Mofolo on Friday, 16 December from 12pm until 6pm. The artist's line-up includes Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, Sibongile Khumalo, Ghorwana from Mozambique, Dr Malombo Philip Tabane and Ndumiso Nyovane.

Other events include Movies Under the Sky at the Orlando Swimming Pool on December 17, with the screening of films such as Mr Drum and Zulu Lover Letter. All events are free. For more information, contact Johannesburg Concerts on 011 487 2818.
