Cosmo City gets
wheelie bins

IN another step towards affirming the new homeowners in Cosmo City are part of a formal housing structure, Pikitup has handed over wheelie bins.

PIKITUP surprised residents of Cosmo City with the first rollout of its 240-litre wheelie bins.

The City's waste management service provider handed out 89 wheeled refuse bins to the new residents of Cosmo City Extension Two. They were the first to move into the new housing development.

The new wheelie bins gradually have been introduced across Joburg to make rubbish collection easier and cleaner.

Residents pay R5,20 a month to rent a bin, which is included in the monthly rates bill. The amount covers manufacturing and distribution costs as well as replacement bins every five to seven years.

Maggie Mofokeng, the first Cosmo City resident to receive her bin, said it was significant to her because it affirmed that she was now part of a recognised formal structure entitled to enjoy fully fledged municipal services.

"Most of us take the availability of and accessibility to municipal services for granted. It is a right we have as ratepayers," said Pikitup's Randburg depot manager, Edson Mphaphuli.

"For some people it is difficult to understand how a person can get excited about being able to enjoy the services provided by the City's utilities, but for those who have not had the means to be part of the City's formal structure such services are a milestone in their progression in a new democracy.

"It is part of realising the dream of a better life for all," Mphaphuli explained.

Pikitup has also started refuse removal services in Cosmo City. It will cover the area every Tuesday. In addition, the waste management company has introduced street cleaning and bulk waste collection services to the residents.

"With all the rapid development taking place in the area, Pikitup will monitor the suburb for illegal dumping activities to ensure the maintenance of a clean and healthy living environment," said Pikitup's spokesperson, Marius de Villiers.

The utility will extend its services in phases to correspond with the rate of completion of the residential developments.
