Joburg aims to
empower women

JOBURG'S department of safety and security is launching a programme aimed at boosting the skills of its female employees.

August 4, 2005

By Tshepiso Seopa

ON THE eve of international Women's Day, the City's department of safety and security is launching a women's empowerment and development programme.

All female employees of emergency management services (EMS) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department will benefit from the programme, which is aimed at advancing their academic and life skills.

It will be launched on Monday, 8 August at a breakfast at the Ferndale Recreation Centre. Women's Day is marked on 9 August.

Council Speaker Nandi Mayethula-Khoza will deliver the keynote address on behalf of the City. Patience Malengane, a motivational speaker, will encourage women in business leadership.

Nongezo Mekgwe, the director: pro-active services in the EMS, said, "The programme is aimed at enabling women to position themselves in all aspects of life. In a work environment they should be in a position to be candidates for senior positions without fear of intimidation.

"The academic side of the programme is to give them opportunities to advance their careers in any career path. Because of the jobs that these women do we feel we need to have training in stress management and other life skills programmes, such as parenting."

Workshops will be held and the women's progress will be checked on a monthly basis. They will do in-service training, as there will be no assessments. The focus will be on training, coaching and mentoring the women.

"The programme is open to anyone working in the department of public safety. The department wants to produce challengers who can tackle anything thrown at them, without fear," Mekgwe said.
