EXHIBITIONS, events, conversations, music and film, lekgotlas and workshops - all are happening this month at Constitution Hill to honour women.
The Women's Gaol, where female prisoners were incarcerated, is now part of Constitution Hill. Along with other spaces on the hill, it is hosting numerous events to celebrate women's freedom. Here are some of the highlights.
Lekgotlas and workshops
To kick off the month, ex-prisoners having been telling their stories over the past two days.
Women's Day
Constitution Hill, in association with Face, or Female Action Towards Creative Empowerment, honours the city's mothers with a vibrant street festival on Women's Day, 9 August.
The celebration runs from 10am to 4pm, from Constitution Hill, on Kotze Street to the Hillbrow Theatre, on Edith Cavell Street.
Conversations
A new programme is launched at Constitution Hill to engage women in conversation, at The Temporary Space on 11 August, from 6pm to 8.30pm.
Music
Well-known comedian Kagiso Lediga and radio personality Azania Mosaka host a musical event on 13 August, from 2pm to 8pm at Constitution Square. Tickets are free. To book, phone 011 381 3100.
The line up consists of Josie Field, Lira, Louise Carver, 340 ml, Karen Zoid, Simphiwe Dana, Lady Lea and Nicky Blumenfeld.
Events
Tommy Boys, Lesbian Men and Ancestral Wives, a book, will be launched on 8 August at the Women's Gaol Lekgotla Space from 3.30 pm to 7pm. The book is about gay and lesbian society in southern Africa.
Koo, the food brand, celebrates South African women with a gala dinner on 11 August at the Atrium in the Women's Gaol from 6pm to 10pm. Tickets are free by booking on 011 673 5434.
The Drum Café will be beating the skins for Lebo Mashile, a spoken word poet, while she performs pieces from her latest book In a Ribbon of Rhythm. This takes place on 20 August at the Women's Gaol at 6.30 pm.
More poetry is planned. The Village Gossip poetry session takes place at the Slovo Courtyard, Constitution Hill, on 21 August at 2pm.
Women in Sports! Forum Empowerment hosts an all-female soccer tournament on the Parade Ground on 21 August from 10am to 5pm.
BUA! expresses social, political and cultural perceptions through spoken words at the Slovo Courtyard on 27 August from 2pm to 5pm. There will be a workshop before the performance, from 11am to 2pm.
Lined-up for this session are Lebo Mashile, Napo Mosheane, Bianca, Ntuthu, Portia, Zee, Triple K, Kele, Lilly, Vuyiswa Vilana and TJ Dema.
Film
A variety of documentaries, some in Setswana, Zulu and Afrikaans, have been organised by the SABC, and will be shown at The Mandela Cell, Number Four.
However, space is limited to 30 people. Number Four, on Constitution Hill, was the notorious prison for black males. Tickets for the films are free.
Among the films are Belonging, Cinderella of the Cape Flats, Nikiwe, The Second Wife, Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony, Spirits of the Uhadi, Raya, Ochre and Water, Being Pavarotti and The Long Journey of Clement Zulu.
Exhibitions
Permanent and temporary exhibitions are open daily from 9am to 4pm at the Women's Gaol. The paintings of activist Fatima Meer are on display this month.
