THE City is owed about R280-million in outstanding traffic fines, and it is collecting its debt.
Over the next two weeks, 1 600 Johannesburg metro police officers will be deployed in all 11 City regions to crack down on drivers who have unpaid traffic fines. These drivers will be arrested.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar explains, "Drivers whose names appear on the system will be shown electronic copies of their warrants of arrest before they are taken to the nearest police station. Only after paying a fine or appearing in court will they be released."
This morning, 87 people were arrested for outstanding fines on Roodeport and Soweto's busy roads. Cars were randomly pulled off the roads at a number of police checkpoints.
About R280-million is owed in traffic fines, Minnaar says, despite the arrests since November last year of 14 958 motorists who had not paid their fines.
"The aim of the crackdown is not only to get outstanding fines, but to make sure that people comply with the rules of the road," he adds.
