Kaya FM ready
to rock Newtown

KAYA FM is celebrating its eighth birthday and move to the "Heart and Soul of Jozi" with a daylong concert.

TRAFFIC is sure to be thick this Sunday in the inner city when thousands of AbomKaya carrying their braai stands, camping chairs and picnic baskets head to Jozi's cultural hub - Newtown - for a fun-filled day of entertainment.

Kaya FM, "The Heart and Soul of Jozi", will be celebrating its eighth birthday with a jazz concert on 21 August at Newtown Park.

The park is between Bassline and Shivava Café.

The radio station will also be celebrating its recent move to Number 1 Central Place, in Newtown, after spending the past seven years in Rosebank, in Jozi's northern suburbs.

AbomKaya will be thumping to the rhythm of Thandiswa Mazwai's Zabalaza and other great performances from Sylvester Mazinyane, Mahotella Queens, Caiphus Semenya, Thlokwe Sehume, Oliver Mtukutzi, Jabu Khanyile, Selaelo Selota and many more.

Charlene Deacon, the managing director of Kaya FM, says, "I'm privileged and extremely excited to host such an event in the heart and soul of Jozi - the place where Kaya FM belongs. I cannot wait to bond with our listeners on a more personalised level."

A birthday celebration as big as the one the station was hosting was long awaited and staff were really looking forward to it, she said.

"Because our listeners contributed to making us who and what we are, we will be running an exciting competition for them - a car or two or three will be given away," said Khethiwe Kubeka, the station's marketing manager.

"Our aim is to say thank you to our listeners for their support and loyalty over the past eight years.

"We have now set a new trend and there will surely be many more that will follow in our footsteps."

Celebrations will start at 10am, and finish at 11pm. No bottles or glasses will be allowed into the venue.

Tickets are available at Computicket for R75 for VIP Mkaya club members and R150 for others. Listeners are invited to join the club for free by visiting the Kaya FM website.
