Auditions for Ballet
Theatre Afrikan

IF IT'S a career as a dancer you are after, make sure you get to the audition for the Ballet Theatre Afrikan's 2006 training programme.

August 17, 2005

By Mamello Makgana

ASPIRANT dancers have only one day to audition for the Ballet Theatre Afrikan's 2006 training course.

The audition, on 3 September, takes the form of a ballet class on Saturday morning at the company's studios in Parkhurst, in the northern suburbs. Candidates must bring along their dance clothes and female dancers must bring their pointe shoes.

"There are an estimated 20 positions open for aspirants," says administrative director Paula Kelly, who describes the audition as an opportunity of a lifetime for young dancers who have the desire to be trained for a full time, professional dancing career.

Kelly says the company is targeting school leavers who have previous ballet training and who have "a passion to dance".

The Ballet Theatre Afrikan has run training programmes that have produced ballet and contemporary dance stars for almost 11 years. Training is daily, and is intense.

The company
Graduates include Kitty Phetla, Yolande Olkers and Thoriso Magongwa, all of whom have won competitions and scholarships and danced overseas.

As part of its satellite projects, the company recently launched a dance academy for youngsters in Alexandra, the township in the north east of the city. After an intense search, 20 children between the ages of eight and nine were chosen from 2 000 hopefuls.

The National Lottery, the National Arts Council, Anglo American Chairman's Fund and South African Breweries are funding the 2006 training programme.

Those wanting to audition need to contact the company to register and book a place. Contact Paula Kelly on 011 880 3099 or 083 267 3029.
