JAZZ on the Lake is sticking to tradition and is again the first major entertainment event in spring. It is the final item on the Arts Alive calendar, where the best local jazz acts appear on one stage.
On Sunday, 4 September hordes of people are expected to head for Zoo Lake in Parkview, with picnic baskets and blankets, for the free, daylong concert. It has taken place for the past 14 years on the last day of the International Arts Alive Festival.
The festival, in which the City of Johannesburg is a key stakeholder, combines dance, music, poetry, visual arts and theatre. It takes place from September 1 to September 4 at a number of venues around the city.
Jazz on the Lake's line-up this year includes two international artists, bassist Gerald Veasley from the United States and Singaporean lute player Farid Ali, better known as "Mr Gambus".

Singaporean lute player Farid Ali
In his 15-year career, Ali has performed at more than 40 international festivals worldwide and has recorded with many big names, like Bobby McFerrin and Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Ernie Watts.
Accompanying Veasley are locals Sydney Mnisi playing saxophone and Rob Watson on drums.
Local jazz giant Gloria Bosman and newcomer Simphiwe Dana are also on the bill. Proving just how talented she is, Soweto-born Bosman has already performed with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo and the legendary Hugh Masakela, and has received countless nominations for music awards.
Judith Sephuma, best known for the title song off her debut album A Cry, A Smile, A Dance, is another highlight.
The concert begins at 10am; get there early to get a great spot for the day. Organisers are encouraging the public to bring along umbrellas, fold-up chairs and picnic blankets. Strictly no alcohol is allowed into the venue, but there is a beer garden.
Safety is being taken seriously and the Parkview and Rosebank police will man the area.
