JOHANNESBURG WATER is determined to make a splash this year in an effort to turn the annual Water Festival at Zoo Lake into the biggest in Africa.

The City's water and sanitation provider officially launched the second Water Festival at Zoo Lake on Thursday, 21 April. "Our vision is to make it Africa's biggest water festival," says Johannesburg Water spokesperson, Jameel Chand.

The festival, which consists of school and corporate competitions, exhibitions, a fun run/walk, and a music festival, runs from 21 to 27 April.

"The key objectives of this festival will focus on public education programmes, awareness building, and profiling the company as a company close to the people and a company that is willing to work with communities to improve water and sanitation services," says Chand.

Thousands of residents are expected to take part.

The City's various departments will have stalls at the marquee throughout the festival, and on Sunday, 24 April there will be a fun walk/run starting at 8.30am. "Entries for the fun walk close just before the start," says Chand. Organisers are expecting 2 000 entries.

On Monday, 25 April and Tuesday, 26 April some 2 000 schoolchildren from around Johannesburg will join in the activities at Johannesburg Water's two water villages created specially for the festival.

During the festival, Johannesburg Water will announce the winners of its art competition.

The Water Festival will end on a high note on 27 April, Freedom Day, with a music festival. Mafikizolo, S'bu, Jabu Khanyile, and Zamajobe are among the artists who will be performing.

The music festival will take place from 10am until 5pm.
