Lenasia honours
RAM Saloojee

THE Lenasia community has honoured individuals and organisations for their 'outstanding contribution to building a better and safer society', presenting the 'Ultimate Achiever' award to anti-apartheid activist Dr RAM Saloojee.

ANTI-APARTHEID activist and former MP Dr RAM Saloojee was presented with the Ultimate Achiever award at the Lenasia Human Rights Awards for his contribution toward the struggle for a democratic South Africa.

Saloojee was an MP from 1994 to 1999, when he became a Senator until 2001. His is currently a member of the Gauteng Legislature and a member of several community organisations.

The award was presented at a function held at the Baitun Noor Center in Extension 5 on 15 April acknowledging individuals and organisations who have contributed to uplifting the community.

Awards presented included:

  • Education: to Jairaj B Badal for his work with underprivileged students.
  • Health: to the Nistara Alcohol and Drug Centre for its work in fighting alcohol and drug abuse in Lenasia, Mayfair, Ennerdale, Fordsburg and Eldorado Park.
  • Women: to Sapna Ragunana for her work with literacy programmes in Lenasia, Lenasia South and Soweto.
  • Community Development: to Shri Adi Sankara Ashrama, an organisation involved in feeding schemes, for providing meals for about 2 000 school children in Lenasia, Orange Farm and Eldorado Park and collecting clothes for charities.
  • Environment: to the Johannesburg Council of the Disabled for its work in providing job opportunities for people with disabilities.
  • Labour: to Professor Mohamed Rajah for contributing to improving labour relations via a weekly show on Radio Islam addressing issues like unfair dismissals and laws regarding domestic workers.
  • Business: to philanthropist Moosa Theba for his contributions to the community as well as his involvement in organisations such as the Johannesburg Institute of Social Services, Jocod, Nistara and Nur-ul-Islam.
  • Welfare and Relief: to the Tsunami Relief Fund 2004.
  • Arts and culture: to Jayaspree Moopen.
  • Youth: to Venesh Murugan.
  • Sports development: to Mohan Hira, a founder member of the Gandhi Walk as well as organiser of karate tournaments, for his contribution to the development of sports in the area.

The event was hosted by East Wave Radio, Southern Globe, The Lenasia Indicator and Lenzinfo.org.za.
