The fruit farm
comes to Orlando

THE Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market has opened the first of many retail markets it plans for previously disadvantaged areas to bring high quality, affordable fresh produce to townships.

April 6, 2005

By Johannesburg City Reporter

A FRESH produce retail market has opened in Orlando East in Soweto as part of the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market's plans to provide local residents with good quality produce at reasonable prices.

The Orlando retail market officially opened its doors on Thursday, 24 March 2005. A huge signboard marks the main entrance, bearing the legend, "Bringing the farm to Orlando… everyday".

"The launch forms part of our company's ongoing campaign geared towards minimising poverty among our community by bringing quality produce closer to people - and at an affordable price," said Bernard Magabe, the chief executive officer of the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market.

It is the first of many such outlets the market intends to establish in poverty-stricken communities, according to Magabe. "Through establishing these retail markets we hope to bring quality produce closer to our communities. But more importantly, we are aiming to create job opportunities for unemployed citizens."

He pointed out that all the produce sold at the Orlando retail market would come straight from the farm, and that the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market would ensure that food safety standards were such that consumers received only the freshest produce.

The Orlando retail market was built on the site where a shop called Good Luck once stood and the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market spent more than R1,8-million renovating the building. "We hope this building brings good luck to the community of Orlando and the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market," Magabe said.
