City Parks scoops gold

JOHANNESBURG City Parks has won gold at the annual Gardenex garden and flower show currently on at the Dome in Northgate.

By Ndaba Dlamini

JOHANNESBURG City Parks has won gold at the tenth Gardenex garden and flower show - described as "a festival of flowers and greenery" - currently taking place at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate.

City Parks won gold in the Outdoor Exhibit category.

"Out of 150 exhibitors, City Parks proved that the agency has the necessary talent," said City Parks spokesperson, Jenny Moodley.

City Park's managing director, Luther Williamson, added: "The City Park's team at Gardenex - and the achievement - show the level of expertise at the organisation. We believe that this level of expertise will go a long way in beautifying our open spaces around the city."

City Parks, an agency owned by the Johannesburg City Council, is responsible for the maintenance and development of Johannesburg's parks and cemeteries. It is responsible for the management and maintenance of the more than a million trees that line Johannesburg's streets, as well as those within parks and open spaces. The agency also runs nurseries to provide plants for city use.

Gardenex features the National Flora Competition as well, presenting some of the country's top flora designers. To celebrate its tenth year, Gardenex, in conjunction with Jacaranda 94.2FM, is holding a draw for one lucky couple to win a trip on the Keith Kirsten Chelsea Garden Tour.

The exhibition features a range of displays, and visitors can enjoy flowers, exotic plants, garden furniture, water features and pottery ornaments. More than 29 000 gardeners, homemakers and traders visited last year's show.

According to the organisers, Gardenex provides a platform for local and international representatives from the flower and plant industry "to exchange ideas and technology, while highlighting a wide variety of industry leaders in flora, gardening and landscaping".

The exhibition is on from 14 to 17 April. Entrance is R30 for adults, R20 for pensioners and children under 15 get in free. On Saturday the exhibition is on from 9am until 6pm, while on Sunday Gardenex is open from 9am to 5pm.
