THE third Lenasia Human Rights Awards, recognising individuals and organisations for their human rights initiatives during the past year, will be held on Friday, 15 April.
Guest speakers at the function include the chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, Jody Kollapen, and the chief editor of the Sunday Times, Mondli Makhanya.
The event kicks off at 6.30pm at The Baitun Noor Centre in Extension 5 Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.
There are various categories in which the work of individuals or organisations will be acknowledged: welfare, health, education, sport, business, labour relations, arts and culture, women, youth, environment, community development and human rights.
A main award - the Ultimate Achiever Award - will also presented. Last year this was awarded to the Gift of the Givers Foundation.
Awards are based on a public participation process, with organisers calling on the public to nominate people in various categories whom, they believe, have contributed significantly to human rights in South Africa.
According to organisers, any person or organisation can nominate an individual, organisation or institution. Each nomination must be accompanied by a detailed motivation, with details of the human rights work done by the nominee.
The awards were started during the 1980s by the late Ameen Akhalwaya, founder of the local newspaper, Lenasia Indicator, but fell away for some years. They were revived in 2003.
This year the Lenasia Indicator, Southern Globe, East Wave Radio and Lenzinfo.org.za are hosting the event.
