CALLING young singers. Theatre producer Colin Law is looking for 12 youngsters to perform in a local version of the Off-Broadway musical "Children's Letters to God".
Auditions will take place at The Broadway Dance Project in Melville on 16 and 17 April as well as on 23 April.
The producers are looking for 12 talented boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 17 who are able to sing and act well. "As this is a musical we will first look at how well they can sing, then we can worry about the dancing and acting," says Law.
"Children's Letters to God" features a collection of songs and scenes that focus on questions children have about themselves, the world they are growing up in, and 'kid' things they want to direct to a higher being, who has all the answers.
"This is an unusual musical in that the script is written entirely for a cast played by young children," remarks Law.
Set to run at the end of July, this is the musical's first showing outside the US.
The company has also ensured the production will be able to reach beyond the usual theatre-going public by performing in community centres around the province.
According to Law, the company decided to put on the musical as it deals with relevant issues children face, and the book was also quite successful in South Africa.
Based on the international best selling book by Stuart Hemple, the musical features music and lyrics by David Evans and Douglas Cohen.
The South African version has Duncan Royce as director, musical staging by Trish Mckenna, choreography by Cinda Eatock, designs by Denis Hutchinson and a musical team led by Du Preez Straus.
Auditions will be held at The Broadway Dance Project, Main Road, Melville, on two successive Saturdays - 16 and 23 April - from 1pm to 6pm and on Sunday 17 April from 10am till 3pm.
Those who want to audition should contact Shawn or Alfred of ByWay Productions on 011 477 0090. They should perform a song that best shows their range of voice and must bring sheet music or their own backing track.
